On the list of  Sustainable Development Goals as outlined by the United Nations, access to Quality Education is the fourth goal of the initiative. “Education enables upward socioeconomic mobility and is a key to escaping poverty”. As global poverty elimination is the primary goal of the SDG initiative education is the most efficient means to this end. With nearly half of all children and adolescents below minimum proficiency standards in reading and mathematics this poses a massive barrier to achieving the SDG’s.

As the Covid-19 pandemic spread throughout the globe, temporary school closure impacted nearly 91% of global students and by April 2020 approximately 1.6Billion children were out of school. According to Unicef “Almost all countries implemented digital and broadcast remote learning policies, but only 60 per cent did so for pre-primary education” Digital instruction was the most used approach for remote learning as illustrated in the graph below.

Digital Literacy

As communication and access to information is increasingly dependent on digital technology the skills required to live, learn and work in such a society are far different than in traditional methods of learning. Digital literacy is built of 4 principles Comprehension, Interdependence, Social Factors and Curation. Digital literacy is built on a foundation of traditional literacy and as seen above there are significant barriers to traditional learning. Not only is Digital literacy important in the education world this need for Digital literacy is important in the professional world regardless of the industry. Not all industries have felt the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic equally as non-digital jobs were the hardest hit. So, to ensure that the global workforce is safe and secure the move towards digital literacy is of chief importance.

How Low code platforms can improve digital literacy:

Low-Code platforms are accessible tools for digital transformations. While traditional software development can be costly, time inefficient and dependent on key personnel Low-code platforms allow users to become Citizen developers within their organizations. In the education world powerful applications can be utilized be teaching and administration staff to monitor a student’s progress and design a curriculum to suit that students’ individual needs. Low-Code tools are beholden to data standardization which allows for greater communication and collaboration with non-traditional partners and this can prove beneficial to both parties.

How Low-code can help prepare students for the work force:

According to EuroStat the most populous fields of study are 1)Business, administration and Law, 2)Engineering, manufacturing and construction and 3) Health and welfare.

As the chart above illustrates studies into the field of Information and Communication Technologies are far below the ever-increasing demand for technical staff. Low-Code platforms excel here as they allow for business users who already understand their own needs and wants for a system they can develop it directly, not only saving time and money for their organization but also increasing their own skill set. Some of these business users may eventually transition into technical roles by utilizing Low-Code platforms thus addressing the changes in the global jobs market.
